About the Artist
Donna Stewart Hickman is a professional artist, graphic designer, and art educator who graduated from
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BFA in Painting and a MA in Arts Education. As a fine artist, she works in a variety of media including oil paint, watercolor, ink, colored pencil, graphite, photography and various software programs. Her favorite is oil paint, for its luminosity, fluidity and high pigmentation. In addition to being a fine art painter, she has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator where she conceptualized, designed and illustrated logotypes, posters, and animation sequences for clients. Donna has also worked as an art instructor where she challenged students to work creatively, learn new techniques, and develop perceptual skills and problem solving skills. She taught drawing, painting, design, digital imaging and photography. She was also responsible for supervising curriculum development. About The Work: "The artwork on this site represents some of my favorite places, which for me elicit feelings of contentment. Not only must there be an emotional response to the location, there must also be strong structural components, a sense of space, interesting play of light and shadow, and intriguing details before I begin the art process. After walking and carefully observing the space, I'll photograph the area. Then back in the studio I'll work on compositional sketches as well as a few color studies, prior to starting the final piece. You might notice the colors I choose are not necessarily photo-realistic but instead follow an alternative color scheme based on color theory. After this is done, I finally make a decision as to the media. The approach to each is really quite different with contrasting challenges. But after all, it's the challenges that make it fun! I hope you like the artwork." Sincerely, Donna |
