Painting

The landscape paintings on this site represent some of my favorite places, which for me elicit feelings of contentment, lightheartedness, and the quiet excitement of exploration and wonder. Not only must there be an emotional response to the location, there must also be strong structural components, a sense of space, interesting play of light and shadow, and intriguing details before I begin the art process. 

After walking the area and carefully observing the space, I'll photograph the landscape. Then back in the studio I'll work on compositional sketches as well as a few color studies, prior to starting the final piece. You might notice the colors I choose are not necessarily photo-realistic but instead follow an alternative color scheme based on color theory. 

After this is done, I finally make a decision as to the media - oil or watercolor. The approach to each is really quite different with contrasting challenges. But after all, it's the challenges that make painting fun! I hope you like the artwork. Please enjoy as you browse through the galleries.
